The Lake Region

The lake region of Chile is a stunning mixture of snow-capped mountains, verdant jungle and big, beautiful lakes. However, not only is this region scenically impressive it also has a rich cultural and indigenous history. Up until the 1880s, the Mapuche people lived here and left behind their incredible savoir-faire which can still be witnessed to this day.

The Chilean Lake District and its surrounding islands will see travellers captivated by their surroundings from the moment that they arrive.

The Parque Nacional Conguillio is the main attraction here and its surprising location right on the flanks of the Volcan Llaima will leave you in awe of your surroundings. In the summer there are a variety of hikes that travellers can choose from and which vary in levels of difficulty. Winter brings snow to the volcano offering the possibility to ski.Puerto Montt is found alongside a large bay and is known for being a starting point for visits to the adjacent fjords. The city has a beautiful wooden cathedral that was built in the nineteenth century and presides over the main square, Plaza de Armas.

Explore Puerto Varas

Puerto Varas is a small town located on the banks of Lago Llanquihue and is popular for the large variety of outdoor activities it provides. With two volcanoes nearby, Osorno and Calbuco, hiking is a must-do followed by fishing in the river or discovering the local flora and fauna in the nearby forests.
River light festival in Valdivia

Valdivia is the oldest city in the region and is now a popular university town. Every year during the second week of February the city sees a festival take place called “Valdivia Week” where boats parade down the river and firework shows take place. It is quite an impressive sight to see the river all lit up with colourful fireworks dotting the sky.
Hike the Volcan Villarrica

In Pucón, travellers will find Volcan Villarrica a favourite of lovers of high-intensity activities. You can hike to the top of this volcano which takes up to four hours to do however it'll be worth your effort as you will be rewarded with a remarkable view of the surrounding area but also, if you're lucky, the sight of molten lava bubbling in the crater. Pucón is the closest town to this and is a welcoming town full of restaurants and bars to relax in.
The art of craft in Temuco

Once the home of famous poet Pablo Neruda, Temuco is a small and pleasant town that holds a rich link to the Mapuche culture. No better is the Mapuche culture witnessed than at the Temuco Municipal market. Here you will find close to 100 stores showcasing the local craftsmanship. From wool to wood and passing by leather and clay there is so much to be witnessed. You will also find a lot of Mapuche jewellery as they are fond of silver. Items such as trapelakuchas and sikils are the most popular and sought after pieces of jewellery.
