Bolivia Tours Explore The Salar de Uyuni

The Salar de Uyuni is a natural marvel and its endless stretch of white land makes it a bucket list destination.

The world’s largest salt flat, Salar de Uyuni measures approximately 12,106 square metres and is an awe-inspiring sight to witness. An expanse of pure white salt that stretches as far as the eye can see and reflects the sun off of its surface, making it seem like you’re walking on clouds.

When it rains, water pools over the surface, mirroring the surroundings and thus creating fascinating optical illusions. The salt found here is collected and then sold across Bolivia as well as exported to countries around the world.

    World’s Largest Salt Flat

The landscape of Salar de Uyuni is one of the most photographed and popular attractions in Bolivia. It is an especially good place for photography enthusiasts as the white plains are perfect to try your hand at perspective shots. When it rains, take a car to the Salar de Uyuni where visitors can drive across the salar giving the impression that you are floating above water.

There are also a number of activities that can be experienced nearby such as a visit to the antique train cemetery located but 3km away. Uyuni once served as a mining hub that transported goods to the Pacific Coast however when the industry crumbled in the 1940s the trains were abandoned on the outskirts of the town. It is a strange sight to see but just like the Salar, it is also a great place to capture on camera.

    Our Favourite Experiences

    • Tunupa Volcano

      Climb Up Tunupa Volcano

The Tunupa volcano gets its name from the God of Thunder, ‘Tunupa’. It is possible to climb this dormant volcano which rises to the height of 4700 meters and is considered an easy hike even for the most inexperienced of climbers. The ascent takes about four hours but it is worth it for the bird’s eye view of the Salar de Uyuni that you get from the top. On the way up you will see a large variety of flora and fauna including humming birds and small rodents.

    • Pulcayo

Learn about the Industrial History of Pulacayo

Pulacayo is an Industrial Heritage Site as it used to be considered the second largest silver mine in the world during the height of its success in the 19th century. Following its collapse in 1959, it has since turned into a sort of ghost town with just a few inhabitants left.  The town is rich in history with the former president of Bolivia, Arcineto Arce Ruiz built a mansion here that is still possible to visit. The first alpaca wool mill was also set up here alongside a theater and a maestranza.

    • Salar de Uyuni stargazing

      Stargazing in Uyuni Desert

For a once in a lifetime experience, you should consider visiting the Salar de Uyuni at night. It is truly one of the most magical sights that you will ever see. Not only will the night sky be filled with thousands of twinkling lights thanks to its location away from man made lights. This allows for an unobscured view of the stars and the Bolivian Milky Way. The nebulae of Sagittarius and the galaxies of the Fornax Cluster are but some of the constellations that can be witnessed here.

    • Colchani

Bring back a souvenir from the Salar at Colchani

Colchani is a picturesque village on the outskirts of Salar de Uyuni where the salt from the Salar is processed before being dispensed across the country. Here you will find a small museum where sculptures and bricks lined the shelves. Visitors can also tour the traditional salt factory to learn more about the extraction process and how the chunks of salt are refined into the tiny grains we know off. A great stopover along your discovery of the area.
